چکیده

Testing alternative metric theories of gravity with an accuracy much better than the present level has recently drawn great attention, in particular in relation to the search for a very weak scalar field, a possible remnant of an early inflationary cosmology. The gravitational deflection of electromagnetic waves is controlled by the dimensionless post-Newtonian parameter γ , which takes a value of unity in general relativity. In this work we claim that the accuracy in the measurement of γ can be substantially improved by measuring the Doppler frequency shift of a microwave beam transponded back to the ground by an interplanetary spacecraft near solar conjunction. In this kind of experiment, the dispersion due to the plasma in the solar corona is the crucial difficulty, which, however, can be essentially overcome using skilful combinations of carriers with different frequencies. The spacecraft Cassini, launched in 1997, adopts a sophisticated radio system, including a Ka-band link at 32–34 GHz, which makes this possible. We discuss the noise budget for two experiments to be carried out with Cassini in 2002 and 2003. In particular, we consider the contribution of the solar corona, the non-gravitational accelerations, and thermal noise due to solar radio emission. We estimate that an accuracy in γ of about 10−5 is achievable. PACS numbers: 0480C, 0450, 9555S, 9660P, 8440V

Solar system effects in Schwarzschild–de Sitter spacetime

The Schwarzschild–de Sitter space–time describes the gravitational field of a spherically symmetric mass in a universe with cosmological constant Λ. Based on this space–time we calculate Solar system effects like gravitational redshift, light deflection, gravitational time delay, Perihelion shift, geodetic or de Sitter precession, as well as the influence of Λ on a Doppler measurement, used to ...

Solar Coronal Plasma in Doppler Measurements

Doppler tracking of an interplanetary spacecraft near solar conjunction is strongly affected by the plasma in the solar corona, the main competitive contribution in measurements of the gravitational deflection of light rays. With the simultaneous availability of carriers in X band and Ka band for interplanetary communications, the plasma contribution to the corona can be accurately eliminated a...

Study of Solar Magnetic and Gravitational Energies Through the Virial Theorem

Virial theorem is important for understanding stellar structures. It produces an interesting connection between magnetic and gravitational energies. Using the general form of the virial theorem including the magnetic field (toroidal magnetic field), we may explain the solar dynamo model in relation to variations of the magnetic and gravitational energies. We emphasize the role of the gravitatio...

Gravitational bending of light by planetary multipoles and its measurement with microarcsecond astronomical interferometers

General relativistic deflection of light by mass, dipole, and quadrupole moments of gravitational field of a moving massive planet in the Solar system is derived in the approximation of the linearized Einstein equations. All terms of order 1 μas are taken into account, parametrized, and classified in accordance with their physical origin. The monopolar light-ray deflection, modulated by the rad...

Relativistic Effect of Gravitational Deflection of Light in Binary Pulsars

An improved formula for the timing of binary pulsars that accounts for the relativistic deflection of light in the gravitational field of the pulsar’s companion is presented, and the measurability of this effect together with its variance estimates are discussed. The deflection of the pulsar’s beam trajectory in the gravitational field of its companion leads to variation in the pulsar’s rotatio...
